On Thursday 4 May 2017, Duncan Sutcliffe, director, Sutcliffe & Co, will be speaking at the Bromsgrove Networking Lunch, hosted by Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce. The topic is a must for all businesses: Cyber Essentials.

A recent survey by the British Chamber of Commerce (BCC)* revealed that one in five UK businesses had been the victim of cyber-attacks in the past year. Additionally, over a fifth of businesses surveyed by the BCC believed the threat of cyber-crime was preventing their company from growing.

Cyber Essentials is a government-backed, industry supported, accreditation scheme to help protect your business against the ever-increasing threat of cyber-attack as well as provide hard evidence of ‘cyber hygiene’ for your clients.

A Cyber Essentials certificate is a mandatory requirement for all suppliers of defence and government contracts that relate to data and IT - and this is being rolled out to all government departments. Many local authorities are now stipulating Cyber Essentials as a necessary requirement for those tendering.

It is not only in the public sector that the accreditation is needed: the private sector is on board, with organisations such as the BCC, Law Society and Institute of Chartered Accountants recommending their members achieve accreditation. Big firms in the UK, such as Barclays, BT, Vodafone, Astra Zeneca and Intel Security, also recently announced their commitment to encourage their suppliers to evidence Cyber Essentials.

Duncan commented: “With the pressure from government and large private organisations already specifying their suppliers have Cyber Essentials accreditation, and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) coming into effect next year that will affect us all, now is definitely the time to act. Cyber Essentials is not a hard process, but a fundamental one for the security now, and the future of, your business.”
