Holiday horror stories can be minimised by good travel insurance.

Travel insurance is designed reimburse you if you have to cancel your trip or return home early, will look after your medical emergencies and costs, will replace lost or stolen possessions and will defend your liabilities.

Adventurous activities, winter sports and working holidays need additional cover. Trips to more dangerous locations may require cover for eventualities such as kidnap, ransom, search and rescue.

Long trips and gap years may need flexibility to cross the globe and perhaps make return visits to the UK. If you take more than one trip a year it may be worth taking an annual multi-trip policy. There can be special deals for families or groups of friends travelling together.

Make sure you read the medical declaration on your policy; most insurers will not cover you for pre-existing medical conditions unless they are pre-approved. It can be difficult for people with medical conditions or the elderly to obtain travel insurance but there are specialist policies available.
