Public Liability
Public Liability insurance is designed to cover the insured’s legal liability to compensate others for personal injury or damage to their property.
Although Public Liability insurance is only compulsory in a handful of industries and professions it makes sense that every business has cover. Even if your business is purely clerical there is always the chance of a claim - the man reading your electricity meter trips on your doorstep...
Premiums are normally based upon the activities you partake in and the size of your business - the more dangerous your profession and the larger the business the higher the risk and therefore the cost of your insurance. The cover is normally restricted to the activities of the business declared to the insurer – a plumber will not be covered to carry out work as a roofer.
Premiums can be reduced by demonstrating to the underwriter that you have procedures in place to minimise the risk with good health and safety and risk management.
If you also supply or manufacture goods then you should also consider products liability insurance. If you provide advice, designs, training or other services you may need professional indemnity insurance. If you install, service or supply products that could have serious consequences if they fail then you may need efficacy insurance.
