How personal accident insurance works
The employer selects what levels of benefit are required and which employees are to be covered. In the event of an employee being injured, the business will receive a weekly benefit if the employee has a temporary injury, or the business will receive a lump sum if it is a permanent injury or death.
The business can then decide what to do with the money; they can pay the injured employee’s salary, they can use it to cover additional costs or overtime, or they can just stick it in the bank.
The level of benefits payable is selected by the business. Commonly, the level will either be a multiple of the weekly/annual salary or a fixed benefit, such as £500 per week for temporary total disability, £250 per week for temporary partial disability, and £25,000 for permanent disability and death. The business can also select different benefit packages for different types of employees and can extend cover to also include injuries that occur outside work.
