Pub and Nightclub Insurance - How to Reduce Claims

We know running a busy venue is tough. Your focus is on creating a great atmosphere, serving your customers, and keeping your staff safe. While it’s good news that the number of accidents is actually down since 2021, the cost of these claims has doubled.
The Double-Whammy of Claims Costs
A latest claims review published by NBS Underwriting for pubs and nightclubs shows a startling trend: The average cost of a public liability claim has doubled since 2021.
A claim that cost, say, £10,000 a few years ago now costs twice that. This means a single incident can have a huge, unexpected financial punch.
Average public liability claim in 2025:
- Pubs: £20,882
- Nightclubs: £10,007
Where is the Biggest Risk?
Looking at five years of data, the single biggest cause of public liability claims is simple: falls downstairs. They account for 17% of all cases.
We understand why this happens – Your venues are often crowded, the lighting is sometimes low for atmosphere, and alcohol is being consumed. These factors make a trip or fall more likely.
But while you can’t stop people from enjoying themselves, you can control the environment to protect them.

Simple Fixes for Big Peace of Mind
These are straightforward, often low-cost steps you can take today to make your stairs safer, protect your patrons, and significantly lower your chance of a damaging claim:
- Brighten Up: Make sure stairways are well lit at all times—not just dimly lit for mood.
- Hold On: Install bannisters on both sides so everyone has a secure grip.
- Non-Slip: Use non-slip coverings on the stair surface itself.
- Contrast is Key: Add contrasting strips or highlights to the edge of each step so they are clearly visible.
- Keep an Eye Out: Ensure you have CCTV coverage monitoring these high-risk areas.
- Check the Wear: Routinely inspect carpeted stairs for wear, tears, or loose edges before they become a hazard.
These actions show that you’re doing everything reasonable to protect your customers. It’s about protecting your community and your business’s reputation from the rising cost of a simple accident.
