Underinsurance: The £4.2 Million Wine Heist That Left a Bitter Taste

Imagine losing £4.2 million worth of stock overnight… only to discover your insurance might cover just 10% of it. Ouch!
That’s the nightmare facing one of Italy’s most famous wine producers after thieves pulled off a rather impressive (and very expensive) wine heist.
And while most of us don’t have millions of pounds worth of luxury wine sitting in a warehouse, the story highlights a serious issue for businesses everywhere: underinsurance.
30,000 Bottles, Two Lorries and One Expensive Mistake
Over one weekend in October, a gang of thieves reportedly broke into a wine warehouse in Tuscany, disabled the security systems and helped themselves to around 30,000 bottles of premium wine.
They even used the warehouse’s own forklifts to load two lorries before making their getaway.
The total haul came to a staggering £4.2 million, but the real sting in the tail wasn’t just the theft; it was that the company’s insurance was designed to cover much smaller losses, meaning it may only recover around 10% of the stolen stock’s value.
That’s a potential £3.8 million uninsured loss.

Underinsurance: Could It Happen to Your Business?
Absolutely. And you don’t need to be storing expensive Italian wine for it to become a problem. Underinsurance happens when the amount you’re insured for isn’t enough to cover the true value of what you could lose.
For example, imagine your business normally holds £50,000 worth of stock, but during busy periods that increases to £150,000.
If your insurance hasn’t been updated to reflect those higher stock levels, you could be left seriously out of pocket if disaster strikes.
And it’s not just stock. Buildings, machinery, equipment and business interruption cover can all be affected by underinsurance.
Homeowners also fall victim to underinsurance, where policyholders do not update the recent rebuild sum insured, meaning their houses are not correctly valued for a total rebuild.
Don’t Let Your Insurance Leave You High and Dry
The good news? Underinsurance is something businesses can take steps to avoid.
Here are 4 simple questions that can make a big difference:
- Has your business grown? If your business has grown, your insurance should grow with it. Make sure you let insurers know updated information on figures such as turnover, employee numbers, and other important information.
- Does your stock fluctuate? Make sure you’re covered during your busiest periods.
- Have replacement costs increased? Yesterday’s values might not be enough today.
- When did you last review your cover? A renewal isn’t always the same as a proper review — make sure you speak to your insurance broker about all the changes that have taken place over the year. For example, additions of company cars, technology including laptops, etc.
