What is business contents insurance?

Business contents insurance is designed to cover loss or damage to business contents by things like fire, flood, storm, theft, etc. Normally, an insurance policy will cover contents within the business premises, but it can be extended to cover portable items like laptops or exhibition equipment. The policy can also include the consequences of loss or damage with a business interruption extension. Stock can also be included, but many insurers consider business contents and stock as separate things.

Does Business Contents Insurance cover items away from the premises?
All policies differ, but most will cover items temporarily removed, however things like laptops and mobile phones which are regularly removed, will often need to be specified so the cover extends outside the premises or even abroad. If you have plant or machinery which is portable or leaves your premises, you might consider insuring it on a fleet, engineering or marine policy, which may be more appropriate.
Does business contents insurance cover computers?
Most polices will allow you to cover computers, some might ask you to split the value of your computers from the value of other contents, such as furniture. Portable computers will generally need to be specified. Alternatively, if you have lots of computer and electronic equipment to insure it might be preferable to insure them on a specific computer or engineering policy. Please note that computers insured as contents are covered for things like theft or damage, not hacks, viruses, data breaches or breakdown, for which you would need cyber or engineering insurance.

Typically, a business contents policy will cover items within the premises, as well as portable items like laptops, which need to be specified. Stock is usually listed separately. When you insure your stock, you will also want to cover the consequences of loss or damage with the addition of business interruption insurance.
